Nepal Commemorates National Right to Information Day, Highlighting Public Empowerment

KATHMANDU – Nepal celebrated National Right to Information Day on Bhadra 3 (August 19), with public figures and leaders emphasizing the importance of transparency and public empowerment. The day commemorates the historic establishment of the right to information as a fundamental right for Nepali citizens under the Constitution of Nepal.

Yam Nath Ghimire, a social reformer and leader from Bardiya, marked the occasion with a powerful message shared with his supporters and the public. In his statement, Ghimire highlighted the right to information as a cornerstone of transparent and accountable governance. “Information is a fundamental right of the people guaranteed by the Constitution of Nepal,” Ghimire stated. “It is the foundation of transparent and accountable governance and public empowerment.”

On this significant day, Ghimire called on everyone to commit to several key principles:

  • Ensuring public access to information
  • Making public bodies more transparent
  • Empowering rural, youth, and women communities
  • Simplifying and making information flow more inclusive in the digital age

Ghimire concluded his message with the powerful slogan, “Information is power — and this power must be in the hands of the people.”

The hashtags used in his post, including #RightToInformation, #NationalInformationDay, and #PublicEmpowerment, further underscore the widespread importance of this issue across Nepal’s political and social landscape.
